Registry Math: How Many Gifts Do You Actually Need?
A simple formula based on guest count, plus the price-point spread that works.
By Maya Chen
Guests do not buy one-to-one with seats. A useful rule: register about 1.2 items per invited guest if you want the registry to last through the shower, the wedding, and the late arrivals. For 120 guests, that is roughly 140 items — not 140 toasters.
Price bands matter more than product count. Aim for a third of items under $50, a third between $50 and $150, and a third above, with two or three “group gift” items (the mixer, the luggage, the honeymoon fund) that a table can chip into. Empty the bottom band and people will send you a vase you already own.
Cash funds are not rude in 2026. They are how couples who already have plates ask for a down payment, a dog, or a week in Oaxaca. Put them next to physical gifts, not instead of — some guests (and some grandparents) still want to wrap something.
Most-wanted flags and quantities keep you from receiving four cake stands. Mark the everyday pieces as most wanted; mark the heirloom serving platter as a quantity of one. Knotly’s registry will do the math with your guest count if you have set one in settings. The rest is taste.
Keep planning
